Richard Kalvar

Kalvar was born in New York in 1944. After studying at Cornell University, he worked as an assistant to the French fashion photographer Jérôme Ducrot. In 1966, an extended trip to Europe with his camera in tow convinced him to become a photographer. In 1972, he helped found the photography agency Viva in Paris and in 1977, he became a full member of the Magnum agency, where he later served as Vice President and President. Kalvar has worked in France, Italy, England, Japan and the United States, combining journalistic and commercial photography assignments with his photographic research. He has participated in numerous group shows and in 2007, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie dedicated a major retrospective to him, accompanied by his book Earthlings.

In the 2001 edition, stories of life and friendship flow around a cup of coffee through the introspective look of two great photographers from the Magnum agency: Martine Franck and Richard Kalvar was born in Belgium in 1938. In 1965, she became a freelancer, creating portraits of artists and writers, but mostly humanitarian reportage. Richard Kalvar was born in New York in 1944. After a long journey in Europe, he embarked on a career as a photographer, specializing in scenes of everyday urban life.
