How to increase the efficiency of coffee producers in northern Tanzania.
The productivity of agricultural systems in Tanzania is too low to provide adequate levels of income and food safety, or investment opportunities in companies. Small farmers face challenges such as insufficiently fertile soil, climate change, access to up-to-date information, and support services for agriculture. There are also very few well-managed professional growers’ organizations, meaning that farmers do not have the entrepreneurial and agricultural skills or knowledge to move from subsistence farming to more competitive entrepreneurial activities.
In collaboration with the Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung Foundation (HRNS), the Lavazza Foundation focuses on enhancing the skills of farmers and their organizational structures, in order to offer them the right tools to become more competitive within the market. Project interventions relate to the whole value chain: from production to marketing, including important issues such as food safety, diversification of production, adaptation to climate change, issues related to the enhancement of the role of women, and creating opportunities for young people.
